Winston Churchill Leadership
Who was He?

Sir Winston Churchill was a British political leader known for his leadership of the United Kingdom during the World War II.

He was the one that gave hope to a hopeless nation during the darkest days of World War II, and instrumental in turning the tides of battle against the Axis Forces in Europe.

A Quick History

Before he became globally famous in World War II, Sir Winston Churchill has had a long career in the military, starting with the Calvary in 1888.

During his military career, Churchill travelled to various countries in the world in Cuba, Oldham, Sudan and South Africa for military campaigns, which he had experienced several successes and failures as well.

His career as a politician started when he won the Seat at Oldham at 1900. He has had a relative success in the political scene, one of his achievements was getting the People’s Budget passed which taxed the rich and have the money for social welfare programmes.

His political career has had its ups and downs, from his post as Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1927 to being exiled from the political scene.

Churchill really began to shine when he returned from the political scene during the beginning of World War II. As Prime Minister, he led the British to fight back against the advancing Germans when almost the world of Greater Europe was taken by the Axis powers.

Besides being a politician, Churchill was also an artist, a historian and a writer; his works winning him a Nobel Prize in Literature.

Leadership Lessons

1. Your weakness is not the final word in your life

During his youth, Churchill had speech impediment which he took several years to overcome. However in his later years, he became a great public speaker, inspiring hope in millions through his speeches and rallying many more during his political campaigns.

Through this, we can learn that our weakness from our youth is not a final word in our life. Churchill never accepted that he couldn’t change that weakness of his and sought diligently to overcome it to become one of the best public speakers in the world.

If you have a weakness in your personality or behaviour, remember that it only takes perseverance to overcome it. You do not have to live with your weakness for life. If you are afraid to speak in crowds; you can overcome it. If you are afraid of conflict, you can overcome it.

Remember that Churchill took many years to overcome it; and you might too. Just persevere!

2. Your words can impact your followers greatly

During the darkest hours of the war; it was the famous words of Churchill that gave Britain hope that it would actually win the war. Now remember that Churchill had no hard facts or basis to make his statement.

It was his mere faith that inspired a whole nation to fight back. And his speech that made his whole nation believe again, that they could actually win the war despite having most of the European countries already fall to the Axis forces.

As a leader, whatever you say to your team or organization can make a great impact in their lives. It can raise the morale of your team. It can bring life into a dead situation. It can instil courage to fight.

You too, can become a leader that makes an impact, first by having faith, and then instilling that same faith in your followers by using the right words.
