The New Leadership Model Transformational Leadership Theory
Transformational leadership theory is the one style of leadership that you want to strive toward: leadership that makes a positive change to the environment. Most of the greatest leaders in the world were transformational leaders. Transformational leadership is more than just a style; it encompasses every aspect of your being; your character, personality, values and beliefs. To be a transformational leader, you must learn to: • Put other’s needs before your own • Challenge the status quo • Inspire your team • Be a role model in your character
Becoming A Transformational Leader Means...
1. Putting other’s needs before your own means that you must be a selfless person. A transformational leader leads people to become better people through serving a particular cause not your own. It usually means you have to get really personal with your team, and not be apart from them. While your followers are helping you achieve your vision, you must understand that they have needs as individuals too, and you must seek to meet those needs before your own. 2. Challenging the status quo means that you must learn to keep asking, ’ How can I improve on this?’. Keep the attitude that everything around you can be done better, can look better, can feel better. There’s always room for improvement. That attitude helps you to challenge what is, and ask what could be. 3. Inspiring your team means that you too must have a vision of the future you want to create. You must then share this vision with your team about what you can make the future to be like if everyone works together. A vision cannot come out from thin air; it must come from your heart. It means that you have to learn to dream big and have faith that your dreams have become reality, if you choose to strive for it. 4. Being a role model means that you have to have impeccable character standards in terms of your integrity and responsibility. Learn to keep your word. If you said that you would do something, do it. If you promised a friend, fulfil that promise. Learn to take responsibility for your actions and not blame people. When something goes wrong, don’t seek to point your finger elsewhere. If it is under your charge, take the full responsibility for the situation. Transformational leadership is a matter of choice, and a matter of years of nurturing. It will take every bit of you to become a truly inspirational, effective transformational leader! The new leadership consisted of new words describing leadership like visionary, charismatic and transformational, and it was developed by Burns in 1978. He contrasted the transactional leadership style to the transformational leadership style.» Transactional leadership Transactional Leaders practice what you would call management-by-exception and contingent reward. They set performance standards and do performance reviews for their followers. » Transformational leadership Transformational leaders have the ability to inspire and motivate their followers beyond their job description. They seek to bring change in their environment or community by improving on the current situation, whatever it may be. They tend to anticipate problems before they come and act accordingly. » Charismatic leadership Charismatic leaders have a natural ability to attract people and inspire commitment to their cause. » Visionary leadership Visionary leaders have the ability to see what things could be in the future, rather than what things are. Through the attractive visions that they give, they are able to draw followers to themselves.
