One of the quotes on leadership that Dwight D. Eisenhower made was, You do not lead by hitting people over the head - that's assault, not leadership. I actually have an experience of a leader who actually think that leadership is about dictating people’s actions and scolding them or hitting them all the time. This leader scolded the team at almost every meeting, lecturing about why they aren’t meeting targets and that their hearts were not on their tasks. And guess what, he ended up with a bunch of very demoralized individuals. I wondered to myself why he had to behave like that, and I reasoned that these people believe that all that scolding is about teaching and instilling discipline. Yes it’s true that there are times where scolding is necessary. However, I find that extremely rare. When you are leading a group of adults, I believe that a good serious heart to heart talk together would do the job. Even in the military, Eisenhower himself believes that it’s not about treating people like objects to be hit. And yet Eisenhower is one of the most successful military leaders in history. When you are in a leadership position, you can either get
• commitment or If you have a formal position of leadership, yes, your verbal and physical punishment might work to change behaviours, but it will never work to change hearts in the long run. You’ll end up with a group of people who go through the motion of doing their tasks but you will never win their hearts anymore. Therefore watch yourself as a leader, watch how you react to deviant behaviours of your team. Your reaction will either gain respect or cause you to lose it.
