The best way to learn how to speak well publicly is to watch other top public speakers in action.
Monkey see, monkey do is the ideal philosophy here. The more you watch these speakers in action, the more likely you will subconsciously pick up subtle clues on how they actually run their speeches.
I watch a lot of these speakers and I find it to be extremely useful in my own journey. Sometimes when I run into a wall on how to make a point, some of these videos will come to mind and I will emulate them in their techniques.
In this section, I have embedded several videos from YouTube; speakers whom I believe to be the best public speakers in the world today.
As you watch these videos, observe how their use of gestures and movement as they are speaking. Also, observe their use of tonality and their use of pauses.
Public Speaking Examples
Public Speaking Example #1: Stephen Covey
Stephen Covey is the famous author of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He has inspired people all over the world to not just become effective, but to find the greatness within.
In this video, he talks about the five emotional cancers in our lives we should get rid of.
While the content of the presentation is very useful for our personal development, remember to observe his public speaking skills with his gesturing and tonality.
Public Speaking Example #2: Anthony Robbins
Anthony Robbins, the author of the books Unlimited Power and Awaken the Giant Within, is one of the most famous motivational speakers in our world today.
In this video, he is speaking at a TEDx event about “What drives you?”.
When you are observing his speech, notice his movement around the stage as well as the energy he emits during the course of his presentation.
Public Speaking Example #3: John C Maxwell
John Maxwell is the top leadership guru of our time. He has written countless books on leadership, team building, communication and more.
His most famous book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is a bestseller and is being read by millions all over the world.
In this video presentation, he talks about the 5 levels of leadership. Observe his gesturing as he is making his point and consider how his gesturing enhances the point he’s trying to make.
Public Speaking Example #4: Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, was also a genius in public speaking. He instinctively knew that a presentation was not just speech and words, but a whole sensory experience.
His product presentations of the iPhones and iPads became one of the most anticipated events in the US for a while as he brought innovation even to his speeches.
In this video of 2007, Steve Jobs introduces the iPhone into the market. I want you to observe mainly his use of visual aids.
Notice how few words he places on the slides because he only uses it to enhance his speech, not take away focus from himself.
Public Speaking Example #5: Martin Luther King Junior
Martin Luther King Junior was a Baptist Pastor and the leader of the civil rights movement and one of the key men to end apartheid in the US.
This is his most famous speech in front of thousands in Washington, I have a Dream.
This was a speech that changed the course and destiny of the US, and while in his time there were no fancy ways to make speeches, notice his use of pauses and tones to create impact.
