Leadership Quotations: General George S. Patton once made a quote on leadership which I find great to expound on:
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.
I would think that what Patton says here would be a little on the extreme, but he gives very good insight into leverage on everyone’s strengths within the organization.
Patton was from the military where the autocratic style of leadership was the dominant form of leadership, and it is surprising that he actually made such a statement.
While I don’t totally agree with what Patton says when he says never tell people how to do things, but the point he is trying to make here is this:
Leverage on everyone’s strength, because two heads are better than one!
You can use this and apply in the same way for your organization or team. Tell them what they have to do, but leave the ‘how-to’ out.
You’ll really be surprised at how resourceful some of the individuals in your team can be!
In fact, you’ll probably get better methods to execute certain tasks than otherwise because these individuals might be the ones that have been doing the same tasks over and over again and they have the clearest idea about the best way to do things.
Give that space of ‘how-to’ to your followers unless they need your input; who knows, you might just see leaps and bounds of developments!
