Inner leadership or self-leadership is as important if not more important than possessing leadership skills.
Before you think that you should be leading others in a team or an organization, ask yourself: are you leading yourself?
If you aspire to be the treasurer of chief financial officer of your company, if ask yourself: do you budget for your personal finances?
If you don’t do personal budgeting, how would anyone want to trust you with the budget of a million dollar company?
This is the principle of inner leadership:Before you decide you lead others, lead yourself first.
And it's extremely important that you do so. The whole idea of leadership is that you're in front, and your team is behind, following your guidance.
I cannot emphasize this enough. You cannot be at the sidelines shouting out orders and making requirements on your followers that you can't fulfil yourself.
You cannot expect from people what you don't expect from yourself.
If people see that you do not practice what you’ve been preaching, you lose a lot of credibility and the trust of your team.
