A Leadership Minute: The Art of Self-Reflection


When was the last time you really did a little self-reflection? When was the last time you took a good look at yourself in the mirror and wondered what kind of effect you were having on others?

I think one of the most important skills of a leader is to learn how to reflect upon one’s own actions. No doubt, most of us are busy in our work, with never ending tasks to finish on, but really, the only way forward is when you learn to reflect upon your own actions and attitudes during the day.

If you think about it, doing more tasks and projects without ever seeking to improve is like a hamster running on the wheel. Sure, you’ll get some things done, but you, the most important asset, remain unchanged.

You could be doing the same tasks 10 years from now, but yet with only the same ability, attitude and belief system. Does that strike fear in your heart? Knowing that a decade down the road, you’ll still be the same person you are today?

I don’t know about you, but that sure scares the hell out of me.

It is the want for a better life, a better future that causes people like you and me to want to improve, and the only way to continually improve is through constant self-reflection. Daily, if possible.

Self-reflection doesn’t have to be a sit-down-and-write exercise. You don’t have to journal every day in order to deem it self-reflection. Self-reflection can happen during the day as you are working on tasks.

“Is this what I’m supposed to do now?”

“Am I approaching this conversation with the right attitude?”

“Is this the message I’m going to deliver to my team later?”

Maybe you’re good at this, maybe you’re not. But it always is a good start to stop yourself during the day, step back a moment and ask these questions.

They’ll help you move forward and upward as you strive to continually improve!
