A Leadership Minute: Facing Discouragement

If you are a leader in your industry or organization, it is little doubt that you will, at points in your life, face challenging situations that you will feel discouraged by.

“Maybe it’s just not possible. No one’s done it before.”

“Maybe I just need to manage my own expectations.”

“I don’t think I have what it takes.”

If you are a leader, these words would have passed your mind one time or another.

Facing discouragement, in actual fact, is a blessing. It is a sign that you’re moving into territory that you’ve never been to before. You’re growing in capacity; you’re being stretched beyond what you’re usually comfortable with.

That, to me, is great! It means you’re becoming a bigger person on the inside!

You need to learn how to deal with it, because it’s something that’s not going to go away. The bigger tasks at hand, the greater will be your discouragement!

1. Shut out the negative thoughts.

You need to take control of your internal dialogue. Instead of agreeing with your negative thoughts, stop them in their tracks and confess positively to yourself.

“There’s nothing too big for me. I can do this!”

2. Try again.

I love this quote: “Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow.”

Even if you do fail, pick yourself up again, and say, “I will try again.” That alone is more than enough.

No matter what you’re going through now, remember that all great leaders had to go through the same baptism of fire. It is but the initiation to greatness!

To your success,
Yihan

Articles

I personally believe that story telling is the best way a person receives a message. Think about it, do you think it is theory that captivates you? Or is it a story?

The things that capture our hearts are stories of valour, courage, sacrifice and strength, not the theory of it. That’s why most classroom lessons don’t make the cut; and that’s why most young people hate classes.

I made a section on leadership movies for this purpose. Movies have been well loved by us from its inception, simply because it tells a story.

What do you hope to impart to your students or followers? Don’t use theory, saying something like: “We should display courage in our dealings with others.” Instead, tell them a story of a man who stood against the popular opinion like Martin Luther or William Wilberforce!

Recommended Books and Resources

I just attended a seminar on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I read this book about over 5 years ago. Attending the course reminded me of the timeless principles embedded in its teachings. Truly, this book is a bestseller for good reason!

Take your time to read through each discipline, especially the section on private victory. In my opinion, private victory is really the foundation of all outward success. Learn to conquer yourself before you seek to conquer the world!
