Goethe made one of the famous leadership quotes:
Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the hearts of men.
I remember when I was a new leader in my organization; I kept the vision sharing to a few people in my team.
When I was sharing with larger groups of people, I found myself unconsciously diluting what I wanted to say; reducing the great vision of what I saw in the future to be more... realistic.
As I thought about it, I realized the reason I didn’t want to share it was because I was afraid.
I was afraid that people would laugh at me. I was afraid that people would think I was weird, because I thought nobody else dreamt like me.
As a result, I diluted a whole lot of what the vision of my organization really was.
But as I grew was a leader, I realized what Goethe said was really true; I mean sure, some people might think you’re just a dreamer, but if you don’t have big dreams, you can never move the hearts of people.
When people see a man with a vision that is big, exciting and meaningful, and they can identify with that vision, they will see him as someone that they can follow. He becomes someone they can give their time and effort to.
Once you have the courage not just to dream, but to share your dream, you’ll gather a team of like-minded individuals who will follow you to fulfil that vision.
